Chapter 12, Problem 5CT
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

Both algae and protozoa belong to the Protista kingdom. Protozoa are free-living parasitic feed on other microbes or tissues or debris. They may kill unicellular or multicellular algae, bacteria and also micro-fungi. Most of the protozoans are found to be pathogenic for humans and well-known example is Malaria causing protozoa Plasmodium. Few severe diseases caused by protozoans are giardiasis, toxoplasmosis, amoebic dysentery, Chagas disease, and African trypanosomiasis. In different phases of their life cycle, they change their feeding strategies. Algae are plant-like protists and prepare their own food through photosynthesis. They possess chlorophyll pigment similar to plants. Based on the pigments they possess, they are called red algae, green algae, golden algae, and brown algae.
