Chapter 12, Problem 43P
Following is the structural formula of hexabromocyclododecane. This compound was at one time used as a flame retardant in polystyrene foam insulation in buildings, but has now been banned because it had been shown to be toxic to aquatic organisms, and can disrupt thyroid hormone levels in laboratory test animals. In addition, it persists in the environment.
Show how this flame retardant could be synthesized from a cycloalkatriene and write the structural formula and IUPAC name of this starting material.

Chlordane, like DDT, is an alkyl halide that was used as an insecticide for crops such as corn and citrus and for lawns. In 1983, it was banned for all uses except against termites, and in 1988, it was banned for use against termites as well. Chlordane can be synthesized from two reactants in one step. One of the reactants is hexachlorocyclopentadiene. What is the other reactant?
Draw a structural formula for the cycloalkene with the molecular formula C6H10 that reacts with Cl2 to give each compound.
INSTRUCTIONS: Choose from the options A-E and explain briefly by illustrations the chemistry behind each answer.
