Chapter 12, Problem 21QP
Summary Introduction

To determine: The mutational event associated with the Burkitt’s lymphoma.

Introduction: Cancer is caused due to a mutation in the genome of the cells. The mutation can be of different types namely single nucleotide, substitutions, variations in the gene copy number, insertions, deletions, and chromosome rearrangements. Burkitt’s lymphoma is a cancer of immune cells, specifically B-cells. In this condition, the immune system of a person is left impaired.

Summary Introduction

To determine:  The chromosomes involved in tumor formation in Burkitt’s lymphoma.

Introduction: Several hereditary and environmental factors play a crucial role in the conversion of normal cells to cancerous cells. Factors associated with increasing the risk of developing cancer are smoking, UV radiations from the sun and viral infections. Genetic factors include inheritance of genes by the offspring’s that are mutated.

PCBs and River Otters: Otters in Washington State’s Green-Duwamish River have high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in their livers. PCBs can bind to the estrogen receptors in animals and disrupt the endocrine system of these otters. The PCBs seem to increase the estrogen to androgen ratio, skewing the ratio toward too much estrogen.     How would increased estrogen affect the river otter population? Based on your reading of the materials in this unit, what factors can affect fertility in humans?   Explain how each of the factors affecting human fertility that you described can disrupt the human endocrine system to affect reproduction.
