Question
Chapter 12, Problem 1P
Summary Introduction
To identify: The structures of heart in the given diagram.
Introduction: A heart is a hollow and muscular organ that is located under the breastbone (sternum) in the chest cavity. The main function of the heart is the pumping of blood to various organs of the body. The heart is made up of cardiac muscles that are attached to the network of collagen fibers.
Expert Solution & Answer
Explanation of Solution
Pictorial representation: Fig.1 represents the structures of the heart.
Fig.1: Structures of the heart
Structure of the heart is described below:
- In humans, structurally, the heart is divided into four chambers: a pair of the atrium (upper) and a pair of ventricles (lower) to avoid mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. Atrium is the receiving chamber of the heart, and ventricle is the pumping chamber of the heart.
- Aorta is the largest artery in the human body that begins at the top of the left ventricle.
- Left atrium and left ventricle are present at the left heart. The left atrium receives the oxygenated blood from the lungs. The left ventricle helps in pumping the oxygenated blood to all parts of the body, which is the main function of the left ventricle.
- The right atrium and right ventricle are visible when the heart is observed from the anterior view. The right atrium receives the deoxygenated blood from body. The right ventricle receives deoxygenated blood from the right atrium and is pumped to the lungs.
- The covering of heart is lined by a membrane known as “pericardium”. The layer of the pericardium is filled by “pericardial fluid” to avoid the friction during the heart beats.
- Chordae tendineae, otherwise called tendinous cords, which is also known as heart strings are tendon-resembling fibrous cords that are made up of connective tissue. This connects the papillary muscle to the tricuspid valve.
- The papillary muscles are muscular projections that extend from the internal wall of the right ventricle.
- Mitral valve or bicuspid valve is present in the left side of the heart. It is located between the left atrium and left ventricle. It is a valve having two flaps present in the heart. The other name for the mitral valve is the left atrioventricular valve or bicuspid valve.
- The right atrium and ventricle are separated from the left atrium and ventricle through a wall or “septum”.
- Both the atriums are separated by a wall known as “interatrial septum”, and the ventricles are separated to each other by an “interventricular septum”.
- For the prevention of backflow of blood, the heart has valves. The valve that is present between the right atrium and right ventricle is called “right atrioventricular (AV) valve or tricuspid valve”, and the valve that is present in between left atrium and left ventricle is known as the “left atrioventricular (AV) valve or mitral valve, or bicuspid valve”.
- The valves that guide the exits of the heart are called “semilunar valves”. They are known as semilunar valves because of their resemblance to the half-moon.
