Chapter 12, Problem 14P
Summary Introduction
To explain: The process by which symmetry is generated in the ER (endoplasmic reticulum) membrane and asymmetry is generated and maintained in the plasma membrane.
Concept introduction: The ER (endoplasmic reticulum) is the site of production of lipids. From the ER, the lipids are transported through the Golgi complex to the plasma membrane. The membrane of the ER, Golgi and plasma membrane are in dynamic equilibrium that is, there is a constant exchange of lipid between the three. Also aged lipids are sent to the lysosomes for degradation.
