Exercises 49-54 deal with sickle cell anemia, an inherited disease in which red blood cells become distorted and deprived of oxygen. Approximately 1 in every 500 African-American infants is born with the disease; only I in 160,000 white infants has the disease. A person with two sickle cell genes will have the disease, but a person with only one sickle cell gene will have a mild, nonfatal anemia called sickle cell trait. (Approximately 8%-10% of the African-American population has this trait.)

If we use s to represent a sickle cell gene and S a healthy gene, the above table shows the four possibilities for the children of two Ss parents. Each parent has only one sickle cell gene, so each has the relatively mild sickle cell trait. Find the probability that these parents give birth to a child who

- A rodentologist investigating various aspects of the aging process wanted to see whether staying “lean and mean” that is, being under normal body weight would lengthen life span. She randomly assigned newborn rats from a highly inbred line to one of three diets: (1) unlimited access to food, (2) 90% of the amount of food that a rat of that size would normally eat, (3) 80% of the amount of food that a rat of that size would normally eat. She maintained the rats on the three diets throughout their lives and recorded their life spans (in years). Antibiotic resistance occurs when disease‑causing microbes become resistant to antibiotic drug therapy. Because this resistance is typically genetic and transferred to the next generations of microbes, it is a very serious public health problem. Of the infections considered most serious by the CDC, gonorrhea has an estimated 1.14 million new cases occurring annually, and approximately 50% of those cases are resistant to any antibiotic. Assume a health clinic in California sees 11 patients with gonorrhea in a given week. Information obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, at www.cdc.gov. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health Antibiotic resistance occurs when disease-causing microbes no longer respond to antibiotic drug therapy. Because such resistance is typically genetic and transferred to the next generations of microbes, it is a very serious public health problem. Gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported notifiable disease in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 27% of gonorrhea cases tested in 2010 were resistant to at least one of the three major antibiotics commonly used to treat this sexually transmitted disease.3 A physician treated 10 cases of gonorrhea at some point in 2010. What is the distribution of cases resistant to at least one of the three major antibiotics? What is the probability that exactly 1 out of the 10 cases was resistant to at least one of the three major antibiotics? What is the probability that exactly 2 out of 10…arrow_forward
- According to a report by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), containers and packaging generated about 34.6% of all municipal solid waste (MSW) in the country in a recent year. This was the largest category of such waste. The next highest group was nondurable goods, which accounted for 25.4 % of waste. This was followed by durable goods at 10.9%, yard trimmings/other at 13.4%, and food scraps at 15.7%. Suppose last year, one large midwestern U.S. city processed 303 (1,000 tons) of MSW broken down by waste type as follows: Waste Type Containers and Packaging Nondurable Goods Durable Goods Yard Trimmings/Other Food Scraps MSW (1,000 tons) 129 73 28 45 28 Determine if there is a significant difference between the distribution of municipal solid waste in this midwestern city and the distribution released by the EPA a. Martin, a researcher at a nearby university, is currently studying a new strain of dogwood tree, believed to be resistant to air pollution. In an initial phase of the study, Martin found that 50 seedlings of the new strain were planted in the area and 42 (84%) of them died in three years. 1. Martin wants to know it the new strain of dogwood tree is more resistant to air pollution than the standard strain. He formulates the following null hypothesis: The percentage of the new strain dogwood trees that die within three years is 89%, the same as the standard strain. - A pharmaceutical company conducts an experiment to test the effect of a new cholesterol medication. The company selects 15 subjects randomly from a larger population. Each subject is randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups. Within each treatment group, subjects receive a different dose of the new medication. In Group 1, subjects receive 0 mg/day; in Group 2, 50 mg/day; and in Group 3, 100 mg/day. After 30 days, doctors measure the cholesterol level of each subject. To investigate, the researcher conducts an observational study by reviewing 400 records of women in their twenties who have recently given birth for the first time. For each record, he notes whether or not the woman smoked during pregnancy and the baby's birth weight, in addition to the woman's education level, and age. From the data, the researcher creates two groups: women in their twenties who smoked during pregnancy and women in their twenties who did not smoke during pregnancy. Then he compares the average birth weight between the two groups. (a)Why might the researcher have chosen to perform an observational study (by gathering information from past records) and not a randomized experiment (by assigning pregnant women to either the smoking or nonsmoking group at random)? - An agricultural scientist tests six types of fertilizer, labeled A, B, C, D, E, and F, to determine whether any of them produces an increase in the yield of lima beans over that obtained with the current fertilizer. For fertilizer C, the increase in yield is statistically significant at the 0.05 level. For the other five, the increase is not statistically significant. The scientist concludes that the yield obtained with fertilizer C is greater than that of the current fertilizer. Explain why this conclusion is not justified.arrow_forwardSuppose we are interested in the risk of peripheral neuropathy among persons with diabetes.
