Exercises 49-54 deal with sickle cell anemia, an inherited disease in which red blood cells become distorted and deprived of oxygen. Approximately 1 in every 500 African-American infants is born with the disease; only 1 in 160,000 white infants has the disease. A person with two sickle cell genes will have the disease, but a person with only one sickle cell gene will have a mild, nonfatal anemia called sickle cell trait. (Approximately 8%-10% of the African-American population has this trait.)

If we use s to represent a sickle cell gene and S a healthy gene, the above table shows the four possibilities for the children of two Ss parents. Each parent has only one sickle cell gene, so each has the relatively mild sickle cell trait. Find the probability that these parents give birth to a child who
is healthy.

- Antibiotic resistance. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health Antibiotic resistance occurs when disease-causing microbes no longer respond to antibiotic drug therapy. Because such resistance is typically genetic and transferred to the next generations of microbes, it is a very serious public health problem. Gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported notifiable disease in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 27% of gonorrhea cases tested in 2010 were resistant to at least one of the three major antibiotics commonly used to treat this sexually transmitted disease.3 A physician treated 10 cases of gonorrhea at some point in 2010. What is the distribution of cases resistant to at least one of the three major antibiotics? This was the largest category of such waste. The next highest group was nondurable goods, which accounted for 25.4 % of waste. This was followed by durable goods at 10.9%, yard trimmings/other at 13.4%, and food scraps at 15.7%. Suppose last year, one large midwestern U.S. city processed 303 (1,000 tons) of MSW broken down by waste type as follows: Waste Type Containers and Packaging Nondurable Goods Durable Goods Yard Trimmings/Other Food Scraps MSW (1,000 tons) 129 73 28 45 28 Determine if there is a significant difference between the distribution of municipal solid waste in this midwestern city and the distribution released by the EPA a. - According to CDC estimates, more than 2.8 million people in the United States are sickened each year with antibiotic‑resistant infections, with at least 35,000 dying as a result. Antibiotic resistance occurs when disease‑causing microbes become resistant to antibiotic drug therapy. Because this resistance is typically genetic and transferred to the next generations of microbes, it is a very serious public health problem. Of the infections considered most serious by the CDC, gonorrhea has an estimated 1.14 million new cases occurring annually, and approximately 50% of those cases are resistant to any antibiotic. Assume a health clinic in California sees 11 patients with gonorrhea in a given week. Information obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, at www.cdc.gov. Therefore, when someone needs a transfusion in an emergency and their blood type cannot be determined, they are given type O negative blood. For this reason, donors with this blood type are crucial to blood banks. Unfortunately, this blood type is fairly rare; according to the Red Cross, only 7% of U.S. residents have type O negative blood. Assume that a blood bank has recruited 19 donors. Martin, a researcher at a nearby university, is currently studying a new strain of dogwood tree, believed to be resistant to air pollution. In an initial phase of the study, Martin found that 50 seedlings of the new strain were planted in the area and 42 (84%) of them died in three years. 1.
