Concept explainers
To draw: a dot plot that represents the data and identify the shape of the distribution.
Answer to Problem 20E
The distribution is symmetric.
Explanation of Solution
Given:
Ages: 24, 21, 22, 26, 22, 23, 25, 23, 23, 24, 20, 25
Calculation:
The dot plot uses a number line to show the number of times each value in a data set occurs.
Dot plots (or line plots) show clusters, peaks, and gaps in a data set.
Draw a number line that includes the least, 20, and the greatest value, 26. Then place a dot above the number line for each data value.
A peak occurs at 23. The data on the right of the distribution are approximately a mirror image of the data on the left of the distribution. So, the distribution is symmetric.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the dot plot is drawn and the distribution is symmetric.
