Concept explainers
A pair of toy cart wheels are rolled obliquely from a smooth surface onto two plots of grass—a rectangular plot and a triangular plot—as shown. The ground is on a slight incline, so that after slowing down in the grass, the wheels will speed up again when emerging onto the smooth surface. Complete the sketches, and show some positions of the wheels inside each plot and on the other side of each plot, thereby indicating the direction of travel.

Thanks The captain of a ship views the top of a lighthouse at an angle of 60" with the horizontal at an elevation of 6 meters above sea level. Five minutes later, the same captain of the ship views the top of the same lighthouse at an angle of 30" with the horizontal. Determine the speed of the ship if the lighthouse is known to be 50 meters above sea level. - 1. Over the entrance to a restaurant is mounted a strip of equally spaced light bulbs, as shown in the figure at the side. Starting at the left end, each bulb turns on in sequence for one-half second. Thus, a lighted bulb appears to move from left to right. After the last bulb on the right turns on, the apparent motion reverses. The lighted bulb then appears to move to the left, as part b of the drawing indicates. As a result, the lighted bulb appears to oscillate back and forth. Is the apparent motion simple harmonic motion? Explain.
