Chapter 11, Problem 6TIF, Identifying product cost distortion Peachtree Beverage Company manufactures soft drinks. Information

It is known that both products have the same direct materials and direct labor costs per case. Peachtree Beverage allocates factory overhead to products by using a single plant-wide factory overhead rate, based on direct labor cost. Additional information about the two products is as follows:

Jamaican Punch: Requires extensive process preparation and sterilization prior to processing. The ingredients are from Jamaica, requiring complex import controls. The formulation is complex, and it is thus difficult to maintain quality. Finally, the product is produced in small production run sizes.

King Kola: Requires minor process preparation and sterilization prior to processing. The ingredients are acquired locally. The formulation is simple, and it is easy to maintain quality. Finally, the product is produced in large production run sizes.

Explain the weakness in the per-case product profitability report in light of the additional data.

The ABC Company manufactures two products, Product Alpha and Product Beta. Both are produced in a very labour-intensive environment and use similar processes. Alpha and Beta differ by volume. Beta is a high-volume product, while Alpha is a low-volume product. Details of product inputs, outputs and the costs of activities are as follows: Direct labour Annual output hours/unit Number of purchase orders Number of set-ups (units) Alpha 5 1,200 75 40 Beta 5 12,000 85 60 160 100 Fixed overhead costs amount to a total of $420,000 and have been analysed as follows: Volume-related 100,000 Purchasing related Set-up related 145,000 175,000 Using a traditional method of overhead absorption based on labour hours, what is the overhead cost per unit for each unit of product Alpha? 'Brisbane Refinery Ltd' (BRL) processes canola oil for the Supermarket Chain G-Mart. It is involved in continuous processing to produce canola oil and uses FIFO process costing to account for its production costs. The FIFO is suitable for BRL as costs are quite unstable due to the volatile price of the canola seeds it uses in production. The canola seeds are processed through one department. Overhead is applied based on direct labour costs, and the application rate has not changed over the period covered by the problem. The Work-in-Process Inventory account showed the following balances at the start of the current period. Direct materials $195,500 Direct labour 390,000 Overhead applied 487,500 These costs were related to 78,000 litres that were in process at the start of the period. During the period, 90,000 litres were transferred to finished goods inventory. Of the litres finished during this period, 80 percent were sold. After litres have been transferred to finished goods…
