Concept explainers
To describe:
The term “meninges”.
Concept introduction:
The central nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord. The brain is considered as the most complex part of the nervous system. The brain and spinal cord is surrounded by bones, membranes, and fluid.
Explanation of Solution
The brain lies in the cranial cavity of the skull, while the spinal cord lies in the vertebral canal of the vertebral column. Beneath these bony covering, membranous envelope called meninges are present.
The meninges are the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. The primary function of these membranes is to support and protect the brain and spinal cord. The meninges are made up of three layers, namely dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater. The dura mater is the outermost layer while the pia mater is the innermost layer.
Meninges are the membranous covering of the brain and spinal cord.
