Chapter 11, Problem 16RQ
In a simple electric circuit, the current (I) must remain below 40 milliarr.ps (I < 40 mA) and must also satisfy the function I > 10–6 e25V, where V is the voltage across a device called a diode.
- a. Create a proper plot of these two inequalities with current on the ordinate. The values on the vertical axis should range from 0 to 50 milliamperes, and the values on the horizontal axis should range from 0 to 1 volt.
- b. If graphing part (a) by hand, shade the region of the graph where both inequalities are satisfied.
- c. Graphically determine the max mum allowable voltage across the diode. Indicate the location of this answer on your graph.

a) Sydney tap-water has a fluid electrical conductivity (EC or σ) of approximately 210μS/cm. Express this in terms of Ohm metres (resistivity) and mS/m (conductivity).
b) The fluid electrical conductivity (EC) was measured on a water sample first at 25 °C to 305 μS/cm, then later at 20 °C to 272 μS/cm. Assuming a linear relationship, calculate the EC at 10 and 30 °C.
c) A 20 cm long cylinder with 10 cm diameter is filled with an undisturbed fully saturated sandstone core. A current (I) of 100 mA was passed through the cylinder and a voltage(V) of 10,700 V was measured. Calculate the resistance and the resistivity of the sample.
d) If we further know that the porosity is 1%, can you estimate the fluid electrical conductivity?

A heat pump is an electrical device that heats a building by pumping heat in from the cold outside. In other words, it's the same as a refrigerator, but its purpose is to warm the hot reservoir rather than to cool the cold reservoir (even though it does both). Let us define the following standard symbols, all taken to be positive by convention:Th = temperature inside buildingTe = temperature outsideQh heat pumped into building in 1 day Qe = heat taken from outdoors in 1 dayW = electrical energy used by heat pump in 1 day
Explain why a heat pump is better than an electric furnace, which simply converts electrical work directly into heat. (Include some numerical estimates. )

- Q1. The image below shows an example of "absolute dependent motion analysis", where the motions of two objects depend on each other, and the goal is to find the relations in their motions (i.e., in their positions, velocities, and accelerations). Please put the suggested steps of analysis in the correct order. VA A B VB Differentiate the entire equation with respect to time, and extract the relation in velocities. Repeat for acceleration if needed. Set up a coordinate (s) along the direction of motion from a fixed point (O) or a fixed datum line. Represent the positions of the objects respectively. In some cases intermediate objects need to be considered too and their positions need to be represented as well. Recognize the constant length(s) and find the depending geometric relations between the position variables.arrow_forwardQ8): To find how much heat is required to bring a kettle of water to its boiling point, you are asked to calculate the specific heat of water at 61°C.
