Interpretation:

By using the ultraviolet absorption spectra, the compounds $\text{2,3-dimethyl-2-butene}$ and $\text{2,5-dimethyl-2,4-hexadiene}$ have to be distinguished and the justification of the assignment has to be stated.

Concept introduction:

In UV spectroscopy, the types of bonds or the functional groups can be determined by knowing the value of wavelength of absorption peaks.  The molecules in which conjugation is more, absorb lower energies and therefore, have higher value of ${\lambda }_{\max }$.
