Chapter 10.5, Problem 2CC
Summary Introduction
To find: The effect of PS I in the O2 concentration present in the bundle-sheath cells of C4 plants.
Introduction: A photosystem is an integral part of a plant and plays a very important role in photosynthesis. These multi-protein complexes contain a pigment that helps in absorbing photons from sunlight and utilizes it to catalyze the primary endergonic photosynthetic reaction. There are two types of photosystems present in the plant, that is, PS I and PS II.

The presence of only PS I, not PS II, in the bundle-sheathcells of C4 plants has an effect on O2 concentration. Whatis that effect, and how might that benefit the plant?
Four species in the Chenopodiaceae were found to have one cell C4 photosynthesis. Givee 3 biochemical properties that could establish that these are C4 plants rather than C3 plants. For each property, describe and explain the test result or data you would expect if the plant is C4 rather than C3.
If a C3 plant and a C4 plant are placed in separate sealedcontainers and provided with adequate light and water, bothwill survive. If both plants are placed in a single sealed container, the C3 plant will die. Explain.

- The herbicide dinoseb, which was removed from the market many years ago, killed plants by uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation. Ironically, plants have embedded in the inner membrane of their mitochondria a protein named the “uncoupling protein” that essentially can carry out the same process caused by dinoseb. Excess electrons oxidize lipids in the mitochondrial membranes, thus destroying the electron transport chain B. Excessive oxygen is consumed via reduction to water, thus depriving the mitochondria of the ability to carry out phosphorylation that requires oxygen C. The membrane selectivity required to maintain a proton gradient is altered so the potential for driving ATP synthesis via chemiosmosis is degraded D.
