Equilibrium is the condition at which the rate of formation of product is equal to rate of disappearance of reactant.

Shifting of equilibrium takes place to forward direction if, there is increases in concentration of reactant takes place. It results in production of more product and reaction proceeds but if concentration of reactant decreases then there is no reactant to react which results in backward equilibrium.
