You may have admired the beauty of hardwood floors. Polyurethane is the finish of choice for floors because it is more durable than varnishes and shellacs. Until recently, polyurethane was always an oil-based paint. But recently, the Bayer Corporation developed a water-based polyurethane that reduces the amount of VOCs by 50–90%. In 2000, Bayer was awarded a Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge award for this development. Prepare a summary of this work. Also check stores to see if any water-based polyurethanes are available in your area.

- Write your complete solutions on yellow paper, round your answers to the appropriate number of significant figures, and box the final answer. The deadline for submission is at the end of the class. Note: You do not need to write your solutions for the items that can be derived from your calculators. 1. Three students (Saerom, Hayoung, and Jiwon) are asked to determine the ppm Ca in a drinking water sample by titration with EDTA. Each student performed five trials for the sample. The results in ppm Ca are the following: Saerom Hayoung Jiwon a. Get the mean, SD, and % RSD of each student's results. b. If the true value is 35 ppm, calculate the relative error of each student's results. c. Comment on the precision and accuracy of each student's results. The maximum % RSD and the relative error set by the lab is 5.0%. d. Use the following table to summarize your answers. - Marie Curie was born in Poland but studied and carried out her research in Paris. In 1903, she shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with H. Becquerel and her husband Pierre for their discovery of radioactivity. (In 1911 she received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of two new chemical elements, radium and polonium, the latter named for her homeland, Poland.) They and others observed that a radioactive substance could emit three types of radiation: alpha (), beta (), and gamma (). If the radiation from a radioactive source is passed between electrically charged plates, some particles are attached to the positive plate, some to the negative plate, and others feel no attraction. Which particles are positively charged, which are negatively charged, and which have no charge? Of the two charged particles, which has the most mass? Radioactivity. Alpha (), beta I(), and gamma () rays from a radioactive element are separated by passing them between electrically charged plates.arrow_forwardWhich of these statements are qualitative? - Nitroglycerine is a shock-sensitive compound that decomposes as follows: 2 C3H5N3O9(l) --> 6 CO2(g) + 3 N2(g) + ½ O2(g) + 5 H2O(g) 10.0 kg of nitroglycerine sits in a 5.0-L cylinder. A chemist, angry that an experiment didn’t work, foolishly kicks the cylinder, thereby inadvertently performing his last and most dramatic experiment. The final temperature of the product mixture is 595 oC. Assume ideal gas behavior and complete decomposition. Calculate the total pressure (atm) in the cylinder the moment before the explosion.arrow_forwardCalculate the number of atoms in 264. µg of cadmium. - A teacher developed a new chemical - NONDISTRACTUS, which allows students to focus in the classroom more and not be distracted by random events. For NONDISTRACTUS to be effective there must be a minimum concentration in the student's body of 2.00 x10-3 mol / L. If the concentration falls below this level, the students are faced with a 10 min nonproductive period where they cannot focus on anything. NONDISTRACTUS was found to undergo a very rapid first-order decay with a half-life (t½) in the bodies of students of 23 min. Based on this information:a) What is the rate law constant, k?b) If the student starts off with an initial concentration of 2.25 x 10-2 mol / L dose, how long will it be until the concentration is above the minimum 2.00 x 10-3 mol / L?
