Association between Glycemic Load and Acne? An article in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics reported on a study of diet in subjects with moderate to severe acne. Read the excerpts from the abstract and answer the questions that follow. (Source: Burris et al., “Differences in dietary glycemic load and hormones in New York City adults with no or moderate/severe acne,” Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, vol. 117 [September 2017]: 1375-1383)
Methods: Sixtyfour participants (no acne,
Results: Participants with moderate/severe acne consumed greater total carbohydrate compared to participants without acne. Participants with moderate/severe acne had greater insulin compared to participants without acne. Although there were no differences between groups, 61% of participants reported foodinfluenced acne.
a. Was this a controlled experiment or an observational study? Explain how you know.
b. Assuming the study was properly conducted, can we conclude that higher consumption of carbohydrates causes more severe acne? Explain.

- Hypnosis and Pain. In the paper “An Analysis of Factors That Contribute to the Efficacy of Hypnotic Analgesia” (Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Vol. 96, No. 1, pp. 46–51), D. Price and J. Barber examined the effects of hypnosis on pain. They measured response to pain using a visual analogue scale (VAS), in centimeters, where higher VAS indicates greater pain. VAS sensory ratings were made before and after hypnosis on each of 16 subjects. A hypothesis test is to be performed to decide whether, on average, hypnosis reduces pain. a. identify the variable. b. identify the two populations. c. identify the pairs. d. identify the paired-difference variable. e. determine the null and alternative hypotheses. f. classify the hypothesis test as two tailed, left tailed, or right tailed.arrow_forwardHelp please!!arrow_forwardA researcher is interested in the impact of joining a weight loss program in the past 12 months on the individuals weight loss. The analysis is restricted to people aged 16 and older who answered yes to the question "During the past 12 months, have you tried to lose weight?" About 5% of the sample had joined a weight loss program in the past year. Below is a subset of some of the other variables included in the survey. Questions were asked about actions taken in the past 12 months. Which ones do you believe should be included as covariates? Provide a justification for your choice. - Individuals with strong religious beliefs often turn to their faith to cope with stressful life events. Relying on God's love and caring is referred to as positive religious coping. Andrea Phelps and her colleagues studied the relationship between positive religious coping and the type of care received by terminally ill cancer patients. Most of the patients in the study were Christian. [Source: Phelps, A. et al., "Religious coping and use of intensive life-prolonging care near death in patients with advanced cancer." Journal of the American Medical Association, 301 (2009): 1140-1147.] Suppose another researcher conducts a similar study but uses a sample of patients whose religious traditions are more varied than the patients in the Phelps study. He samples 400 terminally ill patients to see whether their practicing a religion is related to how likely they are to seek intensive life-prolonging care. Burnout and physical health among social workers: A three-year longitudinal study. Social Work, 56(3), 258-268. Data were drawn from a longitudinal study examining the job-related factors associated with burnout among social workers. In this study, participants were randomly selected from a California registry of clinical social workers. Despite the high risk of burnout in the social work profession, little is known about its impact on the physical health of social workers. To address this gap in the research, the present study used longitudinal data from a sample of social workers registered in California to examine the impact of burnout on their physical health. Physical Health Complaints. Physical health was measured using the Physical Health Questionnaire (PHQ) (Schat, Kelloway, & Desmarais, 2005). For this analysis, we focused on four types of physical health problems: sleep…arrow_forwardThank you for your assistancearrow_forward

They collected data on 50,739 women free of depression symptoms at the start of the study in the year 1996, and these women were followed through 2006. The researchers used questionnaires to collect data on caffeinated coffee consumption, asked each individual about physician-diagnosed depression, and also asked about the use of antidepressants. The table below shows the distribution of incidences of depression by amount of caffeinated coffee consumption. (M. Lucas et al, 2011).
