Concept explainers
Much of the research on common cold prevention and treatment is performed by scientists employed or funded by drug companies. Often these companies do not allow scientists to publish the results of their research for fear that competitors at other drug companies will use this research to develop a new drug before they do. Should our society allow scientific research to be owned and controlled by private companies?

- Do you think the way this issue was handled should be a model for future situations involving potential dangers that might arise from research methods or results?arrow_forwardYour roommate is writing a paper on the subject of cocaine and birth defects in humans and wonders why there don’t seem to be published reports of controlled experiments in humans on the subject; all the studies are on rats! Describe to her how such a controlled experiment would have to be designed and conducted, and convince her that it would never be permitted by any responsible regulatory agencyarrow_forwardIn double-blind studies neither the test subject or the researcher knows who was given the drug and who was given the control. Why are these studies effective for testing a drug that may elevate mood and relieve feelings of depression? Since there are two symptoms that are affected, a double-blind study is required. Double-blind studies are ways to ensure that only the researcher can figure out who is getting the effective drug. Double-blind studies are the most economical way to gather results from testing on humans. The patients and researchers are not given this information so they cannot be influenced in reporting the effectiveness.arrow_forward

- How is the use of the internet affecting today's art of medicine?arrow_forwardWhich of the following statements is true according to Peter Singer? The use of animals in experiments is never justifiable. The use of animals in experiments is justifiable if the animals do not go endure pain. The use of animals in experiments is justifiable if only one animal in one experiment will save thousands of human lives and the animal received a benefit from the experiment. The use of animals in experiments is justifiable in any circumstance since they are lesser beings. None of the above.arrow_forwardDo you think direct-to-consumer tests that provide information about the risk of developing medical conditions (such as breast cancer or Alzheimer disease) should be made available to the public?
