The English perfected the longbow as a weapon after the Medieval period. In the hands of a skilled archer, the longbow was reputed to be accurate at ranges to 100 m or more. If the maximum altitude of an arrow is less than h = 10 m while traveling to a target 100 m away from the archer, and neglecting air resistance, estimate the speed and angle at which the arrow must leave the bow. Plot the required release speed and angle as a function of height h.

Calculate (a) the initial potential energy of the baseball, (b) its final kinetic energy, and (c) the total energy dissipated by the falling baseball by com- puting the line integral of the force of air resistance along the baseball's total distance of fall. Compare this last result to the difference between the baseball's initial potential energy and its final kinetic energy. He plans to face the box-enclosed fan so that the air blast is directed face down through a 1 m diameter balde span area. The system weighs 2.3 kgf, and the student will secure the system from rotating. By increasing the power to the fan, he plans to increase the blade rpm and air exit velocity until the exhaust provides sufficient upward force to cause the drone to hover in the air. Determine (a) the air exit velocity to lift the drone, (b) the volumetric flow rate needed, and (c ) the minimum mechanical power that must be supplied to the airstream. - Use conservation law methods to solve all problems. A crate, initially traveling horizontally with a speed of 18 ft/s, is made to slide down a 14 ft chute inclined at 35°. The surface of the chute has a coefficient of kinetic friction uk, and at its lower end, it smoothly lets the crate onto a horizontal trajectory. The horizontal surface at the end of the chute has a coefficient of kinetic friction uk2. Model the crate as a particle, and assume that gravity and the contact forces between the crate and the sliding surface are the only relevant forces. Using conservation law methods, if uk = 0.35, what is the speed with which the crate reaches the bottom of the chute (immediately before the crate's trajectory becomes horizontal).
