Your client has been exercising on a motorized treadmill, and you are interested in calculating oxygen consumption (VO2 in ml/kg/min), MET level, and energy expenditure (kcal/min).
Session #1: Walking at 2.5 mph and 10% grade
Calculate the following:
Relative VO2 (mL/kg/min)
METs
Kcal/min
Walking (1.9 to 3.7 mph)
gross VO2 (ml · kg-1 · min-1) = [S × 0.1] + [S × G × 1.8] + 3.5
1 MET = 3.5 ml/kg/min
Relative VO2=rate of Oxygen uptake in mil/kg/min.Its used to compare VO2 between individuals of different body size.
Calculation of VO2
First step:Convert speed in mph to m.min
So 2.5*26.8224=67.06 m/min
Second step:Calculate horizontal components:H=speed *0.1=67.06*0.1=6.706ml.kg.min
Third step :calculate vertical component.V=grade(decimal)×speed×1.8=0.10×67.06×1.8=12.07 ml.kg.min
Calculate total VO2 by adding H,V,R(Resting components)=6.706+12.07+2.5=21.27ml.kg.min
So VO2 is 21.27ml.kg.min
