Normally, the cells maintain a negative charge compared to the exterior of the cell. This charge difference is called its membrane potential. 
During depolarization, the negative charge of the cell present interiorly becomes more positive temporarily. This shift in membrane potential from negative to more positive potential is seen during action potential. Due to an influx of sodium ions into the cell change in the charge takes place.
