Expert Solution
Step 1 MUTATION
MUTATION
A change in the sequence of DNA or mRNA is known as a mutation.
> The ultimate result of mutated DNA is a changed polypeptide chain than was originally made.
Mutations can be of different types:
❅ Substitution Mutation
- occurs when a base pair is substituted by another base pair.
- transition mutation occurs when a pyrimidine or purine base is substituted by a pyrimidine or purine base respectively.
- transversion mutation occurs when a pyrimidine or purine base is substituted by a purine or pyrimidine base respectively.
❅ Frameshift Mutation
- occurs when the reading frame of the polypeptide is changed such that none of the original amino acids are made from the point where the mutation occurs.
- deletion occurs when one or more bases are deleted from the mRNA sequence.
- insertion occurs when one or more bases are inserted into the mRNA sequence.
