In American history, the Cold War was a period during which the U.S. and the Soviet Union fought against each other in proxy wars. It was also the time when there started an armed race between the major world powers. During the era of the Cold War, the geopolitical tensions between the two countries increased to an extent that it seemed that a third world war could start, but somehow both these nations managed to avoid the third world war.
