The lack of political guidance and the existence of social division between the leading families in Salem is considered to be one of the most important causes of the Salem Witch trials. These were the trials that included the hearings and persecution of those who were accused of witchcraft. These trials began in February 1692 and ended in May 1693. Following social norms was an important part of the Puritan religion. Therefore, those who did not conform to these norms were considered to be working with the Devil. The mass hysteria led people to support the killing of suspicious ones and those who were different from the Puritans.
