Olaudah Equiano, was a former slave who described the horrors of the middle passage in The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano which was published in 1789. He was known for most of his life as Gustavus Vassa who was enslaved when he was a child in Africa and was taken to the Caribbean and Sold as a slave to a Royal Navy officer. He was sold twice more but he purchased his freedom in 1766. As a freedman he supported the British abolitionist movement and was an active member of anti trade slave movement.
