Question

Susan Whitfield in Life Along the Silk Road recounts a rich collection of stories that focus on the lives of individuals over the course of about 500 years of history on the Silk Road. However, Whitfield is not writing biographies of these individuals, instead, she uses their stories to touch on important themes to help readers better understand the Silk Road, its peoples, cultures, and the regions it connected. Some of the most important of these themes are religion, trade, gender, conflict, and the environment. Choose one of these themes and explain its importance as a frame for understanding the Silk Road. Some questions you should consider include (you do not need to, and probably won’t be able to cover all of these questions, but feel free to use them to help you think through your paper.):

  • How do these stories illustrate the tension in history between structures and individual agency?
  • Does your theme unify or divide?
  • Does your theme clarify or complicate how we think about the Silk Road?
  • What are the limits to your theme as a frame for understanding the Silk Road?

Your paper must include the following or else you will receive an “F” and you will have to rewrite it:

  • A clear thesis (argument) that ties your paper together.
  • At least two specific examples of your theme as it occurs in at least two of the chapters that support your argument.
  • At least one specific example from my lectures that explain how this theme functioned on the Silk Roads and that supports your argument.
