Why is so little known about Homer Plessy, despite his role in one of the most important Supreme Court cases in American history?
In June of 1892 Homer Plessy boarded a car of an East Louisiana Railroad that was designated for use by white patrons only. Although Plessy was born a free person and was 1/8 black and 7/8 white under Louisiana law enacted in 1890. He was classified as black and thus required to sit in the car park. Land in an act of plant disobedience, Plessy refused to leave the white car and moved to the colored bar. He was arrested and jailed.
