The shifting viewpoint Lydia Maria Child has on the Anglo-American colonization of North America is indicative of a difficult journey with shifting goals and points of view. She bemoaned the atrocities Native Americans endured as a result of European colonization and showed compassion for them in her early writings. Her attention, however, changed to the struggle against slavery as she got more intimately involved in the abolitionist movement. This in turn caused her to examine the more general problems of colonization and imperialism in the United States. Child's journey demonstrates the ways in which African American and Native American conflicts overlap and emphasizes the important influence she had on the early abolitionist movement.
