Expert Solution
Who were the Puritans?

Essentially, Puritanism originated in England in early 1600s. They were a section of Church of England devotees who believed that it had to reform and completely separate itself from its Roman Catholic roots. There were two groups of Puritans—those who were against separating from the Church of England and those who wanted to separate from it. The former were later called ‘nonconformists’ and the latter ‘separatists’. While the nonconformists believed that they should not hold congregations outside the Church of England, the separatists did just that. Some even went as far as leaving England for good and settle in its colonies along the Atlantic Ocean. All in all, the rise of the Puritans led to a civil war in England.

The Puritans believed in maintaining a covenant relationship with God, a contract that might ensure their freedom from sin. Their philosophy was mainly influenced by Calvinism, which led to their total rejection of Anglicism.
