Let's Examine. Breaking Barriers: Strengthening Partnership for Transformation
:
In an increasingly diasporic world where we have the means to be a bridge to
connect our nation as a whole, it is disappointing to know how some of us have
chosen to dwell more on the differences that have become barriers: our cultural and
laditional variations, and our diverse religions and beliefs. We give ourselves the
distinct characteristics of our people, like it is something untouchable and
hazardous, rather than something that we must break down to reconnect ourselves
to our fellowmen.
If we are to barricade ourselves from the diverse culture and traditions of our
countrymen, then who are we to say that we foster the need for unity and agreement
when we ourselves are discouraged to advocate them? We look at those who are
different from us as someone who is beyond our understanding and connection. Our
own views are narrowed down to our own thoughts and opinions and not on the
wider picture of reality.
Widening the horizons of our mind, we shall be dawned by the truth that connects us all: for most of the time,
we think we are different per region, different people in different islands...but if we dig out our ancestry, we shall
marvel at the connection of our people because we are all Filipinos, after all. We thought we are different - having a
different religion, a different culture, a different tradition of doing things, but we do not think about the common
things we share? If we are all Filipinos, then what difference does a change in religion mean? Aren't we still Filipinos
through and through?
Our country is divided into regions, but do we think of it as a hindrance to our unity. Our archipelago is
divided into 7.100 islands, separated by the dangers of the sea; and lands separated by the glory and supremacy of
the mountains. We are divided by the natural geography of our archipelago and the differences that we found among
us. These differences have brought so much devastation to the land of our forefathers: countless deaths in what
seems to be an unending war between the Muslims and the Christians; discrimination toward the ethnic population
of our country which have driven them to the depths of the mountains - far from the urbanized atmosphere of the
cities: and the obvious division between the rich and the poor, a common sight in our urban streets. These self-made
barriers make us a country that has yet to transform to its full glory. We are a country hindered by its own people to
attain developmental achievement.
But do we truly need to still live with these barriers of the past and the present? No! we must act as hammers
to tear down the walls that we have built to alienate ourselves from the cries of help of our fellow Fllipinos. These
barriers are nothing but an impediment to the full transformation of our country, a change into a more united.
honded and connected country with one race and nothing less than or more than that. The friendship that we have
with other nations is quite ironic, given the fact that our friendship with our fellowmen is not yet fully developed.
Strengthening the fellowship among us Filipinos is the only way that will unite us as a nation. i know that there is
much work to be done, but let it start with ourselves. All of us are represented by letters, marks and spaces that when
we put altogether would make a very meaningful and powerful sentence of change. We are the catalyst of change
that will clear the labyrinth of our existence.
We must transform ourselves to the Filipino that we are and begin to hammer down the barriers of
indifference and animosity.
