Question 2: A. Give the balanced equation for the reaction that the reaction rate is determined for -2 -2 52082 + 21 2504 + I B. Give the balance reaction reaction equation for the reaction that allows you to determine [S208-2] I ₂ + 2 S 2 O 3 ² 21¯ + S4 062 3 Calculate the reaction rate stolus Experiment 1 9.1 × 10 4 - 10-4 4.36 m = - glm Experiment 21 9.1×10-4 2.07m Experiment 3 9.1x10-4 2.15m - 4.3x10-4 g/m = 4.2x10-4 glm 4 Determine the reaction order... hate = k[S208 [ I ] Y
The reaction rate can also be described by the rate law
Rate = k [S 2 O 82- ] x [I - ] y
The exponents x and y express the order of the reaction (see Chemistry textbook). They can be
determined by comparing the rates and concentrations of the 3 reactions:
• The volume (and therefore the amount) of persulfate in reaction 2 is twice the amount of reaction 1.
What is the result on the reaction rate (calculated above)?
• The amount of iodide, I-, in reaction 3 is twice as large as the amount of iodide in reaction 1. What
is the effect on the reaction rate?
Using these comparisons, the values for x and y can be calculated, and therefore the rate law and the
reaction order can be determined
