Step 1-Introduction

In neurons, neural impulses are transmitted in the form of action potentials. As an action potential travels down the axon and reaches the axon terminal, influx of calcium ions causes chemical substances known as neurotransmitters to be released at the synapse. Neurotransmitters are chemicals by which neurons communicate to one another or communicate with other cells.

Neurotransmitters then cross the synapse (the space between neighboring neurons or between a neuron and another cell type) and bind with specific receptors in the postsynaptic cell. This elicits an effect in the postsynaptic cell.
