Background information: A static respirometer can be used to measure metabolic rates of small aquatic organisms such as fish and crayfish.  The animal is weighed and placed in the chamber.  The chamber is then filled completely with water and sealed, and the dissolved oxygen level in the water is measured for 30 – 60 minutes. The animal is then removed and the respirometer is rinsed before being filled with clean water for the next trial.  Metabolic rates can be calculated knowing the oxygen consumption rate, the volume of the chamber, and the weight of the animal. The picture shows a typical static respirometer.  The probes on the lid measure dissolved oxygen and temperature and are linked to a computer for data collection.

Question -It is common to stop feeding animals for 12 – 24 hours before they are used in metabolic rate trials.  Why is this done?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Animals are usually fasted for some time before running metabolic tests on them to deplete them of the glucose reserves in the body. This causes the metabolic switch. This also causes a decrease in the basal metabolic rate. This is also thought to improve the responsiveness towards the stimuli in the experiment.
