Introns are intergenic sequences i.e. These are stretches of nucleotides present in the pre-mRNA region. These sequences are cleaved by a process called splicing thereby generating a mature mRNA.
In certain eukaryotes, a process called alternative splicing creates different protein-coding sequences by using the same pre-mRNA thereby helps in creating different proteins using the same coding sequences.
Introns are not present in prokaryotes.
