The cell wall is permeable to water and simple sugars like glucose and fructose but impermeable to sucrose. Thereby in addition, the total mass of solutes inside the cell is 225mM and outside the cell is 150mM. Thus the inside of the cell is hypertonic, due to the higher concentration of sugar compared to the outside of the cell.
