The English colonization efforts in the Americas were initiated in the late sixteenth century. The Roanoke Colony established in 1583 in North Carolina and Popham Colony established in 1607 in Maine were the first two English colonies that failed. The first permanent English colony that succeeded in America was Jamestown in Virginia which was established in 1607. The second permanent English colony in America was Plymouth Colony which was established in 1620.
