Dehydration reaction is the type of reaction in which water is removed and unsaturated compound is formed. Alcohol dehydration is acid catalyzed reaction , which can be performed strong , concentrated mineral acids such as sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid . 2-methylcyclohexanol undergoes a dehydration reaction when reacted with concentrated sulfuric acid to give the two main products as: The mechanism of above reaction is :Based on mechanism , the major product is 1-methylcyclohexene as it is formed from tertiary carbocation . This theoretical data contradict with the data of experiment . As the data of experiment says 1-methylcyclohexene has lesser peak area than 3-methylcyclohexene . Also the percent yield of 1-methylcyclohexene is lesser than 3-methylcyclohexene which do not go correct with the theoretical result as seen in mechanism. Thus we can't agree with the experimental result for dehydration of 2-methylcyclohexanol .
