Step 1: Central dogma of molecular biology

The genetic information for protein synthesis is stored in DNA.

DNA is double-stranded.

The information is copied onto an RNA called mRNA by DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. This process is called transcription.

The information is in the form of a genetic code.

The genetic code is a nucleotide triplet called codons. There are a total of 64 codons out of which only 61 code for amino acids while the 3 that are left do not code for any protein and are called stop codons (because protein synthesis stops when RNA polymerase reaches the stop codons).

The nucleotide sequence of mRNA is converted into a peptide sequence by ribosomes with the help of tRNA in a process called translation.
