Elite sprinters make use of type II fibers more than other muscle fibers and are fast glycolytic type. These muscles undergo faster contraction. The anaerobic glycolysis forms the primary source of energy for these muscle fibers. These muscle fibers contain the most myofibrils out of all the other muscle fibers. The cross sectional area and mean diameter of these fibers is largest and contain large volumes of glycogen which is utilized in glycolysis for the generation of ATP fastly. The speed of muscle contraction depends on how fastly the hydrolysis of ATP by myosin's ATPase takes place for the formation of cross bridge. The hydrolysis of ATP by fast muscle fibers is twice times faster than the slow fibers. It results in high rate of cross-bridge cycling. This results in pulling of the thin filaments at a faster rate towards the center of the sarcomeres.
