Erie Canal was built in the first half of the nineteenth century to create a navigable water route from New York City and the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. It was the second-longest canal in the world, after the Grand Canal of China, when its construction was completed in 1825. The canal has 34 numbered locks, beginning with the  Black Rock Lock and ending with the Troy Federal Lock.  Benjamin Wright was the chief engineer of the team which included Canvass White, Amos Eaton among others.
