Confederation, in general, any league or alliance of persons or groups of people. Confederation therefore evolved to refer to a union of sovereign nations in which the emphasis is on the autonomy of each component body, whereas federation refers to a combination of states in which the emphasis is on the supremacy of the common authority.
The Confederated States of the Rhine, sometimes known simply as the Confederation of the Rhine, was a confederation of German client states formed at Napoleon's request several months after he conquered Austria and Russia at the Battle of Austerlitz. Its establishment resulted in the fall of the Holy Roman Empire not long after. The Rhine Confederation ran from 1806 to 1813.
