Describe the different orders of consciousness that Robert Kegan writes about in his book "In over our heads"
Robert Kegan is an American psychologist and consultant. His main focus has always been developmental psychology. He introduced his theory of self-evolution in 1982 in his book called "The Evolving Self". He later represented a revised version of the theory in 1994, in his another book called " In over Our Heads: The Mental Demands of Modern Life". He pointed out that Jean Piaget has not looked much in depth about the emotion or processes and experience of the development. Hence, he tried to build his stages on development based on the building the relationships between self and others and also building strong intellectual bridges.
Kegan viewed the process of development in individuals as an effort to resolve the tension between the desire for differentiation and the desire to be a part of one's surroundings. Each developmental stage in his model is a temporary solution for this lifelong dilemma of yearning for inclusion as well as the need to be unique.
He spoke about five orders of consciousness in terms of development in human beings. He used numerical orders while delineating the orders but later psychologists have also given names to each developmental stage.
