Panic Disorder Introduction

Panic Disorder refers to recurrent and unexpected panic attacks that are associated with (a) persistent concern about having another attack, (b) worry about the consequences of the attack, (c) significant changes in the behavior relating to the attack or (d) combination of any or all of these. 

The DSM 5 criteria for diagnosing panic disorder is as follows:

  1. The individual experiences recurrent and unexpected panic attacks, which are abrupt feeling of fear or intense discomfort that heightens within minutes, during a time in which at least four of the following symptoms occur:
    1. Palpitations or increased heart-rate.
    2. Abnormal sweating
    3. Trembling or shaking
    4. Shortness of breath
    5. Feelings of choking
    6. Chest pain or discomfort
    7. Nausea or abdominal pain
    8. Dizziness or fainting
    9. Chills or hot flashes
    10. Numbness or tingling sensations
    11. Derealizations or depersonalizations
    12. Fear of losing control
    13. Fear of death
  2. One or more attacks were followed by a month (or even longer) of one or both of the following:
    1. Persistent worry or fear about having more panic attacks and/or their consequences.
    2. A significant abnormal change in behavior in response to the attacks.
  3. The disturbance cannot be attributed to physiological effects of a substance such as a drug or medication, or any other medical condition.
  4. The disturbance cannot be explained by any other mental disorder.
