Simple harmonic motion
Simple harmonic motion is a type of periodic motion in which an object undergoes oscillatory motion. The restoring force exerted by the object exhibiting SHM is proportional to the displacement from the equilibrium position. The force is directed towards the mean position. We see many examples of SHM around us, common ones are the motion of a pendulum, spring and vibration of strings in musical instruments, and so on.
Simple Pendulum
A simple pendulum comprises a heavy mass (called bob) attached to one end of the weightless and flexible string.
Oscillation
In Physics, oscillation means a repetitive motion that happens in a variation with respect to time. There is usually a central value, where the object would be at rest. Additionally, there are two or more positions between which the repetitive motion takes place. In mathematics, oscillations can also be described as vibrations. The most common examples of oscillation that is seen in daily lives include the alternating current (AC) or the motion of a moving pendulum.
Describe 2 to 3 different types of dampers, show illustrations, explain operation, benefits, and disadvantages.
A damper is an active control device that dissipates the kinetic energy caused by the external force or sudden impulse applied to the structure. Dampers are used to provide control over the flow of materials. It absorbs the shock or vibration received from external forces. There are many types of dampers depending upon their uses and application.
The dampers that are used as a resistance device for an earthquake is known as seismic dampers.
There are many types of Seismic dampers. Some of them are given below:
1). Friction dampers
2). Viscous Dampers
3). Magnetic dampers
1). Friction Dampers are the most economical and effective dissipative control devices.
Working of friction dampers - In this damper, the dissipation of kinetic energy occurs due to friction between the contact surfaces. The seismic energy is spent on friction between the surface in contact.
Benefits- Friction dampers are most economical, reliable, and effective.
These dampers are used as a bracing and retrofitting of the buildings
