Griffith experiment changed the understanding of genetic material and DNA was accepted as the genetic material. He conducted experiments on a strain of bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae. He cultured this bacteria which showed two patterns of growth: smooth shiny colonies(S strain) and rough colonies(R strain) and the difference was because of the presence of mucous coat in S strain bacteria and R strain lacked it.
Initially Griffith took these two strains of Streptococcus and injected both to mice. Mice that were injected with S strain got affected by pneumonia and died while the mice with R strain did not die. Secondly, he took S strain bacteria and heat killed them and then injected into the mice but the mice did not die. Further, he mixed the heat-killed S bacteria and live R bacteria and then injected into the mice but this time mice died. He also found living S strain bacteria in dead mice.
