Define antigenic determinant and antigen receptor. How
are they related to each other?
Antigen- An antigen is a substance that is harmful to the body and the body needs to protect itself by generating the immunological response for that particular antigen. It may be a foreign matter, a pathogen, any chemical, etc.
Antigen determinant- It is a part of an antigen that provides a site of binding of an antibody. The antibody binds with the antigen at antigen determinant also called an epitope.
Antigen receptors- They are also called B cell receptors because they are present on the B cell.
The function of the B cell receptor is to provide a site for the antigen to attach from the B cell and then the B cell breaks down the pathogen into peptides. The peptides are recognized by the T helper cell and stimulate the cytokines secretion which in turn signal the B cell to produce antibodies which are required for the destruction of the pathogen. So, basically, your B cells receptors are helping the formation of antibodies.
