Based on the Group III cation analysis, make a flow chart or schematic diagram to illustrate the separation process of Group III cations.
The seven cations of Group III are Mn+2, Fe+3, Co+2, Ni+2, Zn+2, Mn+2, Al+3 and Cr+3. They are precipitated as sulfides in ammoniacal solution buffered with ammonium chloride.
The group is divided into subgroups by the action of a strong base upon a solution of the cations. Chromium, zinc and aluminum hydroxides dissolve in excess potassium hydroxide solution to form a soluble group, whereas manganese, iron, nickel and cobalt hydroxides precipitate to form an insoluble group.
