Step 1

When you read the refractometer after adding 2-3 drops of urine underneath glass, like a telescope against a light source, you can see liquid as dark area and a light area. The line dividing these areas is used to read the results. Look where the lower line of the gray shaded area (as in the picture)crosses the scales.

Scale on the right most is for serum Protein concentration and scale on the left are for specific gravity.
