Phenol red glucose broth is a testing medium that is used to distinguish Gram-negative enteric bacteria by analyzing their sugar utilization capacity. The broth is made of glucose, phenol red (pH indicator), and peptone.  

Glycolysis is the process of producing pyruvate from carbohydrates (glucose). Fermentation is the process of producing acid (lactic acid) from pyruvate under anaerobic conditions.
