Question

1d regulation of the lack operon by the lack repressor is an example of negative regulation. what in general does it mean to say that a gene or operon is subject to negative regulation ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

E.coli  bacterium intake glucose as a primary source of energy metabolism .

When a glucose is scarce , the E.coli bacterium induces the synthesis of several proteins for the utilization of lactose as an energy source .

lactose is  disaccharide composed of glucose and galactose. the enzyme beta-galactosidase cleaves the bond between glucose and galactose ,whereas subsequent step convert galactose into glucose thereby yielding two molecules of glucose from single molecule of lactose.

Lac operon consist three enzyme :

  • beta-galactosidase breakdown lactose
  • lactose permease allows lactose to enter into the cell
  • galactoside acetyl transferase acetylates no of proteins

All three gene transcribed by a single polycistronic mRNA from lac operon promoter called Plac
